Python: Find an increasing sequence consisting of the elements of the original list

Python Programming Puzzles: Exercise-85 with Solution

Write a Python program to find an increasing sequence consisting of the elements of the original list.

Input:
[1, 3, 79, 10, 4, 2, 39]
Output:
[1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 39, 79]

Input:
[11, 31, 40, 68, 77, 93, 48, 1, 57]
Output:
[1, 11, 31, 40, 48, 57, 68, 77, 93]

Input:
[9, -2, 3, 4, -2, 0, 2, -3, 8, -1]
Output:
[-3, -2, -1, 0, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9]

Pictorial Presentation:

Python: Find an increasing sequence consisting of the elements of the original list.

Sample Solution:

Python Code:

def test(nums):
    result = sorted(set(nums))
    return result

nums = [1, 3, 79, 10, 4, 2, 39]
print("Original list of numbers:")
print(nums)
print("Increasing sequence consisting of the elements of the said list:")
print(test(nums))
nums = [11, 31, 40, 68, 77, 93, 48, 1, 57]
print("\nOriginal list of numbers:")
print(nums)
print("Increasing sequence consisting of the elements of the said list:")
print(test(nums))
nums = [9, -2, 3, 4, -2, 0, 2, -3, 8, -1]
print("\nOriginal list of numbers:")
print(nums)
print("Increasing sequence consisting of the elements of the said list:")
print(test(nums))

Sample Output:

Original list of numbers:
[1, 3, 79, 10, 4, 2, 39]
Increasing sequence consisting of the elements of the said list:
[1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 39, 79]

Original list of numbers:
[11, 31, 40, 68, 77, 93, 48, 1, 57]
Increasing sequence consisting of the elements of the said list:
[1, 11, 31, 40, 48, 57, 68, 77, 93]

Original list of numbers:
[9, -2, 3, 4, -2, 0, 2, -3, 8, -1]
Increasing sequence consisting of the elements of the said list:
[-3, -2, -1, 0, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9]

Previous: Find the index of the matching parentheses for each character in a given string.
Next: Find the vowels from each of the original texts (y counts as a vowel at the end of the word).

Python: Tips of the Day

Find current directory and file's directory:

To get the full path to the directory a Python file is contained in, write this in that file:

import os
dir_path = os.path.dirname(os.path.realpath(__file__))

(Note that the incantation above won't work if you've already used os.chdir() to change your current working directory, since the value of the __file__ constant is relative to the current working directory and is not changed by an os.chdir() call.)

To get the current working directory use

import os
cwd = os.getcwd()

Documentation references for the modules, constants and functions used above:

  • The os and os.path modules.
  • The __file__ constant
  • os.path.realpath(path) (returns "the canonical path of the specified filename, eliminating any symbolic links encountered in the path")
  • os.path.dirname(path) (returns "the directory name of pathname path")
  • os.getcwd() (returns "a string representing the current working directory")
  • os.chdir(path) ("change the current working directory to path")
