Python Exercise: Visualize the state/province wise Active cases of Novel Coronavirus in USA

Python Project: COVID-19 Exercise-12 with Solution

Write a Python program to visualize the state/province wise Active cases of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in USA.

Sample Solution:

Python Code:

import pandas as pd
import plotly.express as px

covid_data= pd.read_csv('https://raw.githubusercontent.com/CSSEGISandData/COVID-19/master/csse_covid_19_data/csse_covid_19_daily_reports/03-18-2020.csv')
covid_data['Active'] = covid_data['Confirmed'] - covid_data['Deaths'] - covid_data['Recovered']
us_data = covid_data[covid_data['Country/Region']=='US'].drop(['Country/Region','Latitude', 'Longitude'], axis=1)
us_data = us_data[us_data.sum(axis = 1) > 0]

us_data = us_data.groupby(['Province/State'])['Active'].sum().reset_index()
us_data_death = us_data[us_data['Active'] > 0]
state_fig = px.bar(us_data_death, x='Province/State', y='Active', title='State wise recovery cases of COVID-19 in USA', text='Active')
state_fig.show()

Python: Tips of the Day

Find current directory and file's directory:

To get the full path to the directory a Python file is contained in, write this in that file:

import os
dir_path = os.path.dirname(os.path.realpath(__file__))

(Note that the incantation above won't work if you've already used os.chdir() to change your current working directory, since the value of the __file__ constant is relative to the current working directory and is not changed by an os.chdir() call.)

To get the current working directory use

import os
cwd = os.getcwd()

Documentation references for the modules, constants and functions used above:

  • The os and os.path modules.
  • The __file__ constant
  • os.path.realpath(path) (returns "the canonical path of the specified filename, eliminating any symbolic links encountered in the path")
  • os.path.dirname(path) (returns "the directory name of pathname path")
  • os.getcwd() (returns "a string representing the current working directory")
  • os.chdir(path) ("change the current working directory to path")
