Pandas Practice Set-1: Read specified rows and all columns of diamonds DataFrame

Pandas Practice Set-1: Exercise-49 with Solution

Write a Pandas program to read specified rows and all columns of diamonds DataFrame.

Sample Solution:

Python Code:

import pandas as pd
diamonds = pd.read_csv('https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mwaskom/seaborn-data/master/diamonds.csv')
print("First 7 rows:")
print(diamonds.head(7))
print("\nAll columns:")
print(diamonds.loc[0, :])

Sample Output:

First 7 rows:
   carat cut color clarity depth table price x y z
0   0.23      Ideal     E     SI2   61.5   55.0    326  3.95  3.98  2.43
1   0.21    Premium     E     SI1   59.8   61.0    326  3.89  3.84  2.31
2   0.23       Good     E     VS1   56.9   65.0    327  4.05  4.07  2.31
3   0.29    Premium     I     VS2   62.4   58.0    334  4.20  4.23  2.63
4   0.31       Good     J     SI2   63.3   58.0    335  4.34  4.35  2.75
5   0.24  Very Good     J    VVS2   62.8   57.0    336  3.94  3.96  2.48
6   0.24  Very Good     I    VVS1   62.3   57.0    336  3.95  3.98  2.47

All columns:
carat       0.23
cut        Ideal
color          E
clarity      SI2
depth       61.5
table         55
price        326
x           3.95
y           3.98
z           2.43
Name: 0, dtype: object

Previous:Write a Pandas program to concatenate the diamonds DataFrame with the 'color' Series.
Next: Write a Pandas program to read rows 0, 5, 7 and all columns of diamonds DataFrame.

Python: Tips of the Day

Find current directory and file's directory:

To get the full path to the directory a Python file is contained in, write this in that file:

import os
dir_path = os.path.dirname(os.path.realpath(__file__))

(Note that the incantation above won't work if you've already used os.chdir() to change your current working directory, since the value of the __file__ constant is relative to the current working directory and is not changed by an os.chdir() call.)

To get the current working directory use

import os
cwd = os.getcwd()

Documentation references for the modules, constants and functions used above:

  • The os and os.path modules.
  • The __file__ constant
  • os.path.realpath(path) (returns "the canonical path of the specified filename, eliminating any symbolic links encountered in the path")
  • os.path.dirname(path) (returns "the directory name of pathname path")
  • os.getcwd() (returns "a string representing the current working directory")
  • os.chdir(path) ("change the current working directory to path")
