Pandas Practice Set-1: Read a dataset from diamonds DataFrame and modify the default columns values and print the first 6 rows

Pandas Practice Set-1: Exercise-2 with Solution

Write a Pandas program to read a dataset from diamonds DataFrame and modify the default columns values and print the first 6 rows.

Sample Solution :

Python Code :

import pandas as pd
user_cols = ['carat', 'cut', 'x', 'y', 'z']
diamonds = pd.read_csv('https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mwaskom/seaborn-data/master/diamonds.csv')
print("First 6 rows:")
print(diamonds[user_cols].head(6))

Sample Output:

First 6 rows:
   carat        cut     x     y     z
0   0.23      Ideal  3.95  3.98  2.43
1   0.21    Premium  3.89  3.84  2.31
2   0.23       Good  4.05  4.07  2.31
3   0.29    Premium  4.20  4.23  2.63
4   0.31       Good  4.34  4.35  2.75
5   0.24  Very Good  3.94  3.96  2.48

Python: Tips of the Day

Find current directory and file's directory:

To get the full path to the directory a Python file is contained in, write this in that file:

import os
dir_path = os.path.dirname(os.path.realpath(__file__))

(Note that the incantation above won't work if you've already used os.chdir() to change your current working directory, since the value of the __file__ constant is relative to the current working directory and is not changed by an os.chdir() call.)

To get the current working directory use

import os
cwd = os.getcwd()

Documentation references for the modules, constants and functions used above:

  • The os and os.path modules.
  • The __file__ constant
  • os.path.realpath(path) (returns "the canonical path of the specified filename, eliminating any symbolic links encountered in the path")
  • os.path.dirname(path) (returns "the directory name of pathname path")
  • os.getcwd() (returns "a string representing the current working directory")
  • os.chdir(path) ("change the current working directory to path")
