C Programming: Split string by space into words

C String: Exercise-31 with Solution

Write a program in C to split string by space into words.

C Programming: Split string by space into words

Sample Solution:

C Code:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
int main()
{
    char str1[100];
    char newString[10][10];
    int i,j,ctr;
       printf("\n\n Split string by space into words :\n");
       printf("---------------------------------------\n");

    printf(" Input  a string : ");
    fgets(str1, sizeof str1, stdin);

    j=0; ctr=0;
    for(i=0;i<=(strlen(str1));i++)
    {
        // if space or NULL found, assign NULL into newString[ctr]
        if(str1[i]==' '||str1[i]=='\0')
        {
            newString[ctr][j]='\0';
            ctr++;  //for next word
            j=0; //for next word, init index to 0
        }
        else
        {
            newString[ctr][j]=str1[i];
            j++;
        }
    }
    printf("\n Strings or words after split by space are :\n");
    for(i=0;i < ctr;i++)
        printf(" %s\n",newString[i]);
    return 0;
}

Sample Output:

C Programming: Tips of the Day

Static variable inside of a function in C

The scope of variable is where the variable name can be seen. Here, x is visible only inside function foo().

The lifetime of a variable is the period over which it exists. If x were defined without the keyword static, the lifetime would be from the entry into foo() to the return from foo(); so it would be re-initialized to 5 on every call.

The keyword static acts to extend the lifetime of a variable to the lifetime of the programme; e.g. initialization occurs once and once only and then the variable retains its value - whatever it has come to be - over all future calls to foo().
