C Exercises: Compute the sum of consecutive odd numbers from a given pair of integers

C Basic Declarations and Expressions: Exercise-34 with Solution

Write a C program to compute the sum of consecutive odd numbers from a given pair of integers.

Sample Solution:

C Code:

#include <stdio.h>
int main()
  {
	int x, y, i, total = 0;
              printf("\nInput a pair of numbers (for example 10,2):");
	printf("\nInput first number of the pair: ");
	scanf("%d", &x);
             printf("\nInput second number of the pair: ");
	scanf("%d", &y);
	if (x<y)
	{
		return 0;
	}
	printf("\nList of odd numbers: ");
	for(i = y; i<=x; i++)
	{
	  if ((i%2) != 0)
	  {
		printf("%d\n", i);
		total += i;

	   }
    }

	printf("Sum=%d\n", total);

	return 0;
}

Sample Output:

Input a pair of numbers (for example 10,2):
Input first number of the pair: 10

Input second number of the pair: 2

List of odd numbers: 3
5
7
9

C Programming: Tips of the Day

Static variable inside of a function in C

The scope of variable is where the variable name can be seen. Here, x is visible only inside function foo().

The lifetime of a variable is the period over which it exists. If x were defined without the keyword static, the lifetime would be from the entry into foo() to the return from foo(); so it would be re-initialized to 5 on every call.

The keyword static acts to extend the lifetime of a variable to the lifetime of the programme; e.g. initialization occurs once and once only and then the variable retains its value - whatever it has come to be - over all future calls to foo().
